ChatGPT is here to stay with all its might and glory

Well I’m sure you’ve heard of ChatGPT… This AI-powered tool that’s making waves EVERYWHERE (the creative industry included)! Just for some context, basically, ChatGPT is a big brain that’s trained to analyze data and generate new ideas. And it’s already starting to change the way that us creative professionals work.

Should the creative industry be concerned with ChatGPT?

For starters, I wanted to know what the source of this concern would think about this, so obviously I asked ChatGPT—the answer was interesting. See below an extract of its response:

As an AI language model, I am designed to remain impartial and provide information from both perspectives. It is true that AI-powered tools like ChatGPT have the potential to automate certain tasks in the creative industry, such as content creation or idea generation. However, it’s important to remember that AI is not meant to replace human creativity and expertise, but rather to augment and enhance it.

Many creative professionals are already incorporating AI tools into their work and are finding that these tools are helping them work more efficiently and effectively. For example, ChatGPT can help with idea generation, allowing creative professionals to explore a wider range of ideas and concepts than they might be able to on their own. Additionally, AI-powered tools can automate certain tasks, freeing up time and energy for higher-level creative work.

It’s important to note that AI is not a magic solution that will replace all creative professionals. Rather, it is a tool that can help creative professionals work more efficiently and effectively. As with any new technology, there may be some concern about how it will impact the industry and job market...

So, if that’s how it’s been built to think and operate, why are there so many concerns and anxiety amongst the creative community? I tried to dig a little bit deeper, and here’s what it said when I inquired about the community’s anxiety:

It’s understandable that there may be some anxiety and concern among creative professionals about the impact of AI on their jobs and the industry as a whole. The rise of AI-powered tools does have the potential to automate certain tasks that were previously performed by humans, which could lead to some job displacement in certain areas of the industry.

Which is essentially what everyone is thinking, right? I mean, why wouldn’t we react so negatively after all those interesting references we have about AI taking over the world (🦾 Thank you James Cameron!).

Just kidding, but level with me… Didn’t we witness something like this already?—I mean… it didn’t get that far because it got shut down, but I’m sure everyone remembers this character (source here):

So…in my opinion, those concerns are justified. Even I had a couple of rough days thinking about it. And keep in mind I’m not even talking about Midjourney, Stable Diffusion or Dall-e. This article is just about ChatGPT and the plethora of tools stemming from it.

So then, are we in jeopardy?

🙋🏻‍♂️ Completely personal opinion here: I think that if the creative industry wants to operate the same way it’s always done, then the answer is 100% yes! YES! Writers, content creators, strategists, etc. YES!

On the other hand, one of the interesting things that came out of my “conversation” with the ChatGPT was something that I’ve been talking to some people over the last couple of weeks:

“Embrace technology or be left behind”

However, it’s important to embrace new technologies and adapt to new ways of working in order to remain competitive and relevant in an ever-changing industry. Ultimately, the creative industry should not be overly concerned about AI tools replacing professionals, but rather should focus on finding ways to incorporate these tools into their workflows in order to achieve better results.

It’s also worth noting that the creative industry is constantly evolving, with new technologies and trends emerging all the time. While there may be some short-term job displacement in certain areas of the industry, there will also be new opportunities and areas of growth.

As with any industry, it’s important for creative professionals to stay up-to-date with new technologies and trends in order to remain relevant and in demand.

What can I do to stay up-to-date? 🙃

I know that the amounts of information coming from multiple sources about AI can be overwhelming, but here’s a couple of things we can do:

ℹ️ Stay informed

Keeping up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in AI can help alleviate anxiety about how it will impact the industry. By staying informed, we can identify new opportunities and areas of growth that may arise as a result of AI.

⚙️ Embrace AI as a tool, not a replacement

Rather than seeing AI as a threat, we can embrace it as a tool that can help enhance their work.

❤️ Focus on the human element added value

While AI can automate certain tasks, it cannot replicate the unique creativity and problem-solving abilities of human professionals. By focusing on aspects of our work that are uniquely human, we can all differentiate ourselves from AI-powered tools.

🔎 This one is important!Build new skills:

As the industry evolves, so do the skills required to succeed. Creative professionals can avoid anxiety about job displacement by building new skills and adapting to new technologies and trends.

⚛️ Collaborate and network

Collaborating with others can also help generate new ideas and approaches to work that incorporate the latest AI-powered tools.

Afterthoughts

At this point, and with the speed that technology is advancing, who knows what the future holds. The only thing we can do is stay on top of it, and try to advance with it.

Let me know what you think, I’m interested to hear/read other opinions about this topic!
